This division of Building Erection Services Co., Inc. was started in 1993. Larry Fansher, who manages the division, explained what his crews would do: "Anything to do with steel, we'll do it." "Actually," he said, "that includes any type of structural steel work, tower crane erection and welding."
So far, said Fansher, the division has "grown quite a bit, even beyond my expectations." Fansher, who previously operated his own structural steel firm, said working as part of a diverse company like Building Erection Services has given his division distinct advantages over other companies by allowing it to keep its skilled workforce intact.
"This keeps your nucleus together," Fanshar said of the company's overall diversity. "This is one of the hardest parts to do when you're a small company. If you lose your main foremen and personnel like that, then you're basically starting over every time. By being diversified, you can keep your main personnel busy. It really is a benefit to everybody."
The structural steel division was the segment of Building Erection Services responsible for the placement of the art sculptures on tope of the Bartle Hall Convention Center in Kansas City, Mo. Placed via helicopter, all four sculptures were erected in less than an hour.
Some of the other prominent projects the structural steel division has worked on include: Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Kansas City, Mo., which included erection of some 187-foot trusses; the control tower steel at KCI, Galyan's Sporting Goods, J.C. Penney at Oak Park Mall, Ascension Church and school, Harrah's Casino in North Kansas City, Harrah's/Player's Casino in St. Louis and man other projects throughout the greater Kansas City area.
